Fate in fretta.

A hasty graduation

We would have to blush, at least to re-evaluate the question and, with clarity and sincerity, withdraw an award assigned with haste and perhaps superficiality.
It was 2002, a certainly very different political and international context, when at the University of Perugia, with great fanfare, with teachers wearing robes and ermines, in the presence of religious authorities and mayors, the Magnificent Rector of the time recognized to the then Orthodox Metropolitan Kirill an Honoris Causa degree, “for having always looked and worked for the meeting between Christian churches, for peace, for respect between peoples.”
In light of what is happening today and above all of the positions taken by Kirill no longer Metropolitan but even head of the entire Russian Orthodox Church, the right decisions should be taken urgently and even with some embarrassment up to the withdrawal of an honorary degree to say the least. little inopportune.
Although there would be arguments about these hastily awarded honor degrees perhaps more to guarantee visibility to universities and not real recognition to truly deserving personalities on a cultural level, it remains inexplicable that in the light of the bloody Ukrainian war, the Russian invasion and above all the disconcerting words Kirill, a new one-way crusader, champion and friend of Putin, that the Academic Senate of the University of Perugia has not yet decided for the immediate revocation of his degree, to present a formal apology to the tortured Ukrainian people, to express a formal self-criticism for an award given to the wrong person.
Perhaps this serious mistake could once and for all favor a broader reflection on the assignment of these recognitions of these more appropriate degrees to a diplomat than to an ancient and prestigious university like that of Perugia.
In short, is it really necessary to still resort to these mostly fake degrees to recognize skills and merits?
Or, wouldn’t it be better to replace them with a simple recognition as is generally done in other, even prestigious, fora?
What is expected to disavow this graduation from Kirill who, in the face of the Ukrainian massacre, the heartfelt words of Pope Francis and even of the Ukrainian Orthodox, shares a nationalism that clashes and contradicts the universality of faith in the same God.
Kirill’s position from both a cultural and religious point of view is unjustifiable and he certainly does not deserve to be enrolled in the roll of honor of the University of Perugia.
This strange and unjustifiable war among the many novelties, let’s call them that, brings us again after what has always happened in part of the Arab world, even in the West a Church, the Russian Orthodox, kneeling no longer in front of the crucifix but before political power, indeed , to the dictator. There is obviously no room for any recognition, not even awarded years ago.
It is the Academic Senate that must urgently cancel this error. The good name of our university is at stake. Hurry up.
