The safety of Mattarella
Never before have so many followed President Mattarella’s end-of-year speech like this year.
The Italians locked up at home not committed to wearing party shoes and jackets, not intent on transfers to balls, restaurants, mountains and second homes but also now fearful, uncertain, even afraid, have turned their attention to the traditional television message as ever of our President of the Republic.
And Mattarella did not disappoint, confirming the happy tradition of the Presidents of the Republic who as enlightened “by the grace of our Constitution” in difficult moments offer security and hope, unite and interpret common sentiments.
So it was. Mattarella has not even entered a bit into the quarrels of the parties, in the controversies between a right that struggles to appear right and a left that no longer is, between men who, to convince themselves that there are, must bark and no longer propose and confront each other, that they haven’t yet realized that Italians are tired, disoriented, exhausted.
Mattarella, on the other hand, understood this and for this reason he said what the Italians were waiting for: strength, hope, united we can get out of this cursed pandemic and start again. The only true original interpreter of the Italians, the only one who in a moment of crisis and disorientation, in a war that was never declared, never wanted but which took away thousands of Italians, reduced as many to poverty, offered with calm and reassuring tones like those of a father, a thread of light for the future.
But in a few months Mattarella’s task will end, he will cease to be our President, he will hand over the mandate to a quarrelsome, divided, inconclusive Parliament, to parties that are not there, to unlikely leaders, to a world in crisis as never before. it was.
And then what? It will not be the case as it usually happens during wars, and ours is a war with many dead and wounded, in times of dark crises that still do not let us see the end, when a common effort would be really desirable and necessary, that the parties at least on this they agree.
Mattarella is reconfirmed as President of the Republic, as happened for another two years for Napolitano, but today the crisis is much more dramatic than then, avoid tiring political compromises in search of a shared successor that never will be, trust us for a few more time in his safe hands, the end of the legislature is devalued and then the new Parliament decides, together with Mattarella, once the pandemic has been overcome, what to do.
A healthy country, conscious political forces would do so.
